Pocket Port and Pocket Port 'R'

The Perfect Upgrade for 700-1200whp Builds

If you’re making 700-1200whp, a full port isn’t just unnecessary—it can actually hurt performance by increasing port volume too much, reducing efficiency under the curve. That’s why we created the Pocket Port, a cost-effective solution that leaves the ports stock but reshapes and resizes the critical valve pocket areas to improve flow where it matters most.

Now, for those pushing the limits on a stock port we’ve taken it a step further with the Pocket Port R. In addition to our proven pocket porting, we use CNC precision machining to reshape the combustion chambers, eliminating hot spots that can cause detonation. This is especially beneficial for high-performance builds running pump gas, allowing for:

  • More timing, resulting in lower exhaust gas temperatures (EGTs).
  • Reduced knock sensitivity, increasing reliability.
  • Better combustion efficiency, making more power with less risk.
The Benefits:
  • More area under the curve and the ability to make power at lower, safer boost levels.
  • Optimized combustion chamber shaping (Pocket Port R) to reduce detonation and allow for more aggressive timing (on pump gas too!)
  • Increased efficiency, reliability, and overall performance.
Services Include:
  • CNC Pocket Porting – Disassembly, cleaning, and CNC precision porting to optimize flow.
  • CNC Combustion Chamber Reshaping (Pocket Port R) – Eliminates hot spots that cause detonation, improving efficiency and power on pump gas.
  • GSC Power Division Bronze Guide Installation – New bronze guides and seals for enhanced durability.
  • HG Precision Valve Job – Restores sealing and maximizes airflow for consistent performance.
  • Bench Lash to Cams – Lash calibrated to HeadGames Motorworks specifications for peak operation.
  • Milling – Provides a flawless surface finish for proper sealing.
  • Professional Assembly – Assembled with expert care for ultimate reliability and performance.

Not All Parts Are Created Equal—Here’s How We Pick the Best for Your Build!

Valve Upgrades

Why Aftermarket Valves Are Essential

At this power level, upgrading your OEM valves is a must! Aftermarket valves are built with high-strength materials designed to withstand the extreme heat and stress of high-performance applications. While aftermarket valves may bend under extreme conditions, OEM valves are more likely to break—making aftermarket valves the safer, more reliable choice.

Is Bigger Better?
Not in this case! We don’t install oversized valves in 2JZ heads till 1800whp because they’re unnecessary. In fact, we’ve achieved 2200whp and went 6's in a quarter on stock-size valves!

Fun Fact: Oversized valves can actually reduce performance and hurt torque. The oversized valve will flow better, but only from 9mm+ lift. Most cams in this power range have less than 10.5mm so for most of the range the stock size valve will actually outflow the bigger valve. Bigger isn’t always better—it’s about using the right components for maximum efficiency and power.

Spring Pressure: Why It Matters

A common concern when selecting a valve spring kit is adding too much spring pressure, particularly for street applications. However, when it comes to spring pressure, more is generally better than less. Insufficient pressure can lead to valve float, which can cause significant engine damage. Proper spring pressure ensures stable valve control and prevents issues at higher RPMs.

We like to see a minimum of 100lbs on the seat and 240lbs open pressure for reliable performance. Not all springs are created equal—many kits on the market suffer from inconsistent pressures, poor material quality, or improper fitment. That’s why we carefully select the kits we offer—not because of price or brand loyalty, but because they are simply the best options available, proven to be reliable under real-world conditions.

Importance of Correct Valve Spring Pressure

The right amount of spring pressure ensures the springs remain controlled, which in turn keeps the valves functioning properly. The number one cause of valve-train or cam/bucket failure is using the wrong valve spring for your application. If the valve spring isn’t up to spec, nothing else in the system will perform at its best. Proper spring selection is key to maintaining reliability and preventing costly damage.

Buckets (Lifters) and Wear

There's been a lot of misinformation circulating about the need for DLC-coated buckets when running billet steel camshafts in the 2JZ. Some have claimed that these buckets are mandatory—but that's simply not true.

The reality is, a cam follower (often called a "bucket") is designed to follow the camshaft. However, in high-RPM conditions where valve float occurs, the cam is no longer just rolling over the bucket—it’s slamming into it. This aggressive impact displaces oil, and when the bucket runs dry, a DLC coating won’t save it. In fact, the opposite happens: the coating shatters under extreme stress, sending debris into your engine.

At HeadGames Motorworks, we’ve tested DLC coatings in race applications and have seen them fail. Instead of relying on a band-aid solution, we focus on the real fix: ensuring proper clearance between the cam lobes and the head casting, along with setting up the correct valve spring height. Not all head castings are identical, and some lobes might sit too close to the casting, whisking oil away from the lobe and causing dry contact. By clearancing the head and using the right valve spring setup, we prevent the conditions that lead to premature wear and failure—saving you time and money.

We don’t just follow internet hype; we provide real solutions based on experience and data. If you have questions about your 2JZ valvetrain setup, we're here to give you the "why"—not just opinions.

Choosing the Right Camshaft

Planning to relax in a lawn chair and listen to your car? If so, you might be tempted to go for the biggest cams on the market. While that’ll certainly make your car sound great, it could also make it feel laggy and unresponsive. A camshaft that’s too large can deliver the sound you’re looking for, but at the cost of drivability, especially in terms of throttle response and power delivery.

We’ve already chosen the right camshaft for optimized performance at this power level on our Jotform. This comes from years of real-world experience and a deep understanding of camshaft dynamics that is unrivaled. Whether you need help selecting a cam or want to use our proven recommendations, you can find the best option for your build by filling out the JotForm provided.

The Best Cam for Your Boosted Adventures

If you love pushing your car to its limits and diving into boost on the street, a smaller cam is your best bet! We recommend sticking with GSC S1 cams up to 1000whp. And from 1000whp-1500whp we suggest the GSC S2 cam both with our cam clearance service ,They provide plenty of area under the power curve, ensuring smooth, reliable performance that keeps both your dyno and your smile happy for miles of boosted beatings!
